Does Having an Ileostomy Cure Ulcerative Colitis?

Ulcerative Colitis is it cured by having an ileostomy? Is something people often ask in groups or just outright believe because surgeons tell them that they are cured once they have their ostomy surgery. This is something I have heard opinions from both sides and as I live with a permanent ileostomy and have lived with Ulcerative Colitis the majority of my life; I decided I would give you *my* view on the subject.

When I had my Jpouch surgery back in ’08 the surgeon told me my colitis would be cured with a small chance of getting pouchitis which would apparently go away with steroids or antibiotics. I believed him that I would be fine, but although I was better than before my surgery I still wasn’t right. Whilst pregnant with Ra-Ra in ’13 I believe the pouchitis began flaring and after she was born I was periodically experiencing horrific tummy pains but I am one of those “I have been in worse pain” chronically sick people, so I didn’t do anything about it.

It wasn’t until I started to get really extended painful cramps that would double me over and I was hospitalised, that I really started to think hmmm this isn’t much of a cure. It was this that made me think about having my ileostomy formed. Two more admissions, plenty of tests and it was final I was having an end ileostomy, once my ileostomy was formed it was like sweet relief; I have what is known in the ostomy world as a “Barbie bum” which means no rectum and sewn up, this is where the active disease I think was harbouring and spreading into the pouch.

An Autoimmune Disease is the umbrella term that Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) falls under and that is the term in which Ulcerative Colitis lands, this means that you can suffer symptoms that are associated with the immune system. So for me my joints get affected a lot, I suffer with virus’s longer than healthy people, chronic fatigue but other people can suffer different symptoms. This is a permanent condition that can’t be cured it is there forever, however the severity of symptoms will change from person to person.

But back to the question in hand I believe Ulcerative Colitis as a stand alone symptom is cured by having an ileostomy but the rest of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease or Autoimmune Disease symptoms can’t be. What do you think? Do you think it is cured or not? The whole thing cured or just part of it?
