Christmas Traditions

Welcome welcome to the ninth day of blogmas! This post is all about the little Christmas traditions my little family have both old and new. Traditions can really make Christmas special not just for yourself but for your kids as well. In fact my fondest memory of Christmas growing up was every December 1st waking up to my Mam playing Christmas music and then obviously waiting for the Coca Cola advert to come on telly but that comes on so early now it doesn’t have the same effect.

When it comes to the tree 00Steve won’t allow it to be up before the twelfth of the month and this year we had the elves bring it down whilst the kids were in bed on the eleventh and had it as if the elves had decorated it during the night. 00Steve has me take out all of the branches and assemble the tree and then complains I haven’t fluffed the branches out enough! Then he puts the lights and the beads on the tree as he has some major OCD and has even been known to move my baubles around when I’m not at home! The top of our tree has a fairy that Ra-Ra sewed when she was around 3 years old. I have a mix of baubles on my tree but the one that has pride of place and is the most precious tradition of mine is our first Christmas snowman snow globe. It has to go on last and be at the front of the tree. I usually decorate the tree whilst listening to the same Christmas songs that my Mam played from the 1st of December every year; this year I didn’t as 00Steve was playing on the xbox and he needed to be able to hear what was happening.

For the last couple of years it has been tradition that Ra-Ra and 00Steve do the banister and they use tinsel as I won’t have that on my tree, a garland I knit a few years ago of holly and some lights. Ra-Ra has said that doing the stairs really makes her happy and really that is all that matters. This year it is quite classy looking as there isn’t loads of stuff on it.

I don’t let the kids touch my tree, I am quite possessive over it actually; so both Ra-Ra and Button have their own trees. I decorate Button’s as he is too little right now to do it himself, but Ra-Ra has a pink tinsel one that she adores with unicorn and diamond baubles and she does that herself I just put the lights on and the beads. It goes in her room and 00Steve has bought a timer switch so it is on when she gets up on a morning and when she goes to bed.

Do you have any family Christmas traditions? I would love to hear about them!
